Apples by Christos Nikou will be the Greek submission in the 93rd Academy Awards for the nominations in the category of Best international Feature Film, as announced by the Ministry of Culture and Sports. The film has been produced by the Greek production company Boo Productions (Dogtooth, Attenberg) and co-produced by the Polish production company Lava Films, the Musou Music Group and the Slovenian production company Perfo Productions. Apples is a co-production of the Greek Film Centre.
Apples has already been warmly received in international film festivals, such as the 77th Venice International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere, the 33rd Tokyo International Film Festival, the 33rd Tokyo Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival and the 56th Chicago International Film Festival (where it was awarded the Silver Hugo-Best Screenplay award in the international feature film competition). The film is also competing in the 61st Thessaloniki International Film Festival (5-17/ 11/2020) in the International Competition section.
It is worth noting that Cate Blanchet supports the film as an executive producer, promoting it through Dirty Films production company.
Apples is a sensitive, humorous and visually interesting approach to the theme of identity in a dystopian world. The main character, who is depressed and suffering from amnesia, is in search of a new identity in order to fit in the community. Therefore, he is assigned routine tasks, which, as they are being carried out, seem to confuse him even more, since the new and unknown mingle with the familiar.
